UPS, FedEx and DHL: why is total weight alone not enough for a multi-piece shipment?

Total weight does not show each carton’s space

Two ten-carton shipments with the same 100 kg actual weight can have very different chargeable weight because their carton sizes, density, long sides and packing differ. Give finished L×W×H, gross weight and piece count per carton. If pieces are truly identical, say so; do not average different cartons into one dimension.

Measure the finished outer package

Sealing, corner protectors, wrap, cushioning, frames and pallets can change the outer size. UPS public guidance says to measure at the longest point; irregular packages should be measured as their outer theoretical rectangle. Use the final handover condition, not bare-product, inner-box or pre-reinforcement measurements.

Record actual gross weight per piece

Use suitable weighing equipment and record each package’s actual gross weight; do not use an average where cartons differ. UPS explains that actual and dimensional weight are compared and billable weights totalled for multi-piece shipments. Rounding, divisors, minimums and surcharges vary by service and lane.

Explain the packing and label relationship

State total piece count, which cartons match, carton numbers or labels, whether they travel to one consignee, stackability, and any crate, pallet, long, fragile or protruding feature. A carton list and finished-pack photos support review and later handover checks.

Special cargo is not assessed by weight alone

Powders, cosmetics, pastes and chemical materials need item, composition, use, packing and applicable SDS/MSDS review even when total weight is low. Invoice and packing-list quantities and descriptions must match the actual cartons. Complete documents do not guarantee acceptance, price, timing or clearance.
